SSRI Use Tied to Possible Sexual Dysfunction
A prescription for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) often comes on the heels of a specific diagnosis, such depression, panic disorder and anxiety disorders. But there can be some significant Paxil side effects associated with SSRIs such as Paxil. Among those is a form of sexual dysfunction, both during use and following discontinuation, which is also known as Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD).
Variety of Symptoms
The prevalence of sexual dysfunction during the use of SSRIs has been well-documented. Most antidepressants, including SSRIs, cause sexual side effects that can last throughout treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic. Side effects that occur during the use of SSRIs often include difficulty becoming aroused, lack of interest in sex and difficulty achieving orgasm. For many people, these are often the side effects that bother them the most. Sexual side effects are also often the primary reason people stop using antidepressants, according to Mayo.

But sometimes when people discontinue SSRI use, another series of sexual side effects can occur. One study, published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, showed that PSSD occurred in as many as 60 percent of patients who took 20 milligrams of Paxil (or its generic version, paroxetine) a day. The range of symptoms can vary in patients, but could possibly include:
- Decreased or absent libido
- Impotence or reduced vaginal lubrication
- Difficulty initiating or maintaining an erection or becoming aroused
- Persistent sexual arousal syndrome despite an absence of desire
- Muted, delayed or absent orgasm
- Reduced or no experience of pleasure during orgasm
- Premature ejaculation
- Weakened penile, vaginal or clitoral sensitivity
