You Could Be Entitled to Compensation Through a Paxil Lawsuit
The antidepressant Paxil (paroxetine), also available as Paxil CR, Aropax, Seroxat, and Pexeva, was one of the first of a group of mood-enhancing drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to be sold in the United States. SSRIs are the best-selling antidepressants on the market, and Paxil has earned drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline billions of dollars since its 1992 introduction. But despite its success, Paxil is associated with a number of severe side effects that have prompted thousands of legal claims against GSK over the years. If you have similarly been injured by the drug effects, you may be able to hold its manufacturer liable through a Paxil lawsuit.
Paxil Injuries Prompt Thousands of Lawsuits
Paxil, generic paroxetine, and other SSRIs are favored by physicians for their relatively low incidence of side effects. Paxil is a dangerous drug in its own right, however, as the thousands of injured users who have sued GSK over the years can attest to. Since Paxil’s U.S. debut, GSK has paid billions of dollars to resolve Paxil lawsuits, including those related to violent behavior, addiction, and birth defects.
Among the first wave of lawsuits against the British drugmaker was that related to Paxil and unusual behavior. Paroxetine may cause some people to become violent to themselves and others, which has prompted nearly 500 suicide and suicide attempt cases.
Paxil users may also become addicted to the drug and experience withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, and shaking when they stop taking it. In 2001 thirty-five people filed a class action lawsuit against GSK over their Paxil addiction and in 2003 an estimated 1,500 Paxil withdrawal claims were consolidated for multidistrict litigation (MDL).
The most recent Paxil side effect to prompt litigation is birth defects. Paroxetine and other SSRIs have been increasingly tied to neonatal harm, including heart and lung defects, facial malformations, and even autism. To date, roughly 1,000 Paxil birth defect lawsuits have been filed against GSK, several hundred of which are being handled by the mass torts program of the Philadelphia Common Pleas Court.
Contact the Rottenstein Law Group for Help With a Paxil Claim
GlaxoSmithKline has paid approximately $1 billion to settle Paxil lawsuits since 1992, and in July 2010 it set aside another $1.4 billion to pay for additional legal claims against it. If Paxil caused you to suffer a change in behavior or withdrawal symptoms, or if the drug caused an injury to your child, then you might be entitled to a portion of that money through a Paxil lawsuit.
